7th July 2024 Windsurfing: Levington Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 10/20 Surf / Sea State: smooth Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: 15 Weather: sunny periods then heavy rain and thunder Max Speed: 18.02 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 29.25 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Sunday 7th July – Windsurf *** River Orwell at Levington – sunny periods with heavy rain later. Foil – 18.09 knot max , 16.87 knot ave, 10.02 knot hour, 15.11 knot mile, 47.35 km., 14.94 knot alpha. Starboard Freeride 150 and a Evolution Freeride foil with a Tushingham Storm 6.5. After yesterday excitement with some interesting weather and I only sailed 9 miles I was keen to have another go today. Once again the forecast was iffy with showers coming again around midday coinciding with high tide at 1.30 so with the winds wsw first thing I decided to give Levington another go arriving at the marina at 9.40 with lots of sunshine, I even stopped to take some pics of the wild flowers and wheat field. With the onshore breeze gusting to around 15 mph I hoped I could get away with my 6.5 as I launched just after ten, no Mag today, she decided to stay at home to sort out her garden! The wind was patchy to start as I did short runs from the marina across the bay I lovely flat water but then the wind backed SW and I started to head up river towards Pin Mill where it looked a bit windier. In the end I did several long runs trying to keep it flying through the lulls being joined on the water by two fellow foilers, Robert and Ian who I think would have rather been winging but his wing is being repaired ! I could see loads of dinghies racing from the Royal Harwich Sailing Club at Woolverstone so sailed up there to see them. I sailed through the start line not getting I the way, had a word with another windsurfer, Paul out racing in his lazer, I then turned and was soon up and flying back, even got snapped by a photographer out taking boat pic:) I then had a 3 mile reach back, flying a good part of it! The wind then went particularly patchy and with a dark cloud approaching I headed for shore just in time for the heavy rain and thunder to arrive, lucky I was in my van watching! It was a disappointingly slow day today, SW is not the fastest direction here even though the water is nice and smooth, if you bear off broad you are heading straight for the bank which makes you pretty nervous, still I sailed a fraction under 30 miles so must have been OK:) PS - someone posted some amazing clouds at Felixstowe Ferry as a front passed over so I quickly drove down in time to catch an amazing sunset:) Photo Album here |
